Activities of Daily Living
what are adl'S
Activities of Daily Living, often called ADLs, are the essential self-care tasks people perform each day to maintain their health, safety, and independence. As individuals age or experience illness, injury, or disability, these everyday activities can become more difficult to manage without assistance.

basic adl's
Bathing
The ability to bathe, shower, groom, and maintain personal hygiene safely.
Dressing
Selecting appropriate clothing and putting it on independently.
Toileting
Getting to and from the restroom, maintaining hygiene, and managing personal care needs.
Transferring
Moving safely between a bed, chair, wheelchair, or other locations within the home.
Eating
Preparing food when necessary and feeding oneself safely.
Continence
Managing bladder and bowel functions independently or with appropriate assistance.

When a person begins struggling with one or more ADLs, it may indicate that additional support is needed to help them remain safe and comfortable at home. Family members often notice changes such as difficulty bathing, missed meals, mobility concerns, poor hygiene, or increased fall risks.
Recognizing these challenges early on can help seniors maintain their independence and improve their quality of life through personalized in-home care.
